“Thou shalt have no other gods before me… Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…”
Exodus 20:2,5
I have coined the word Godvernment. It is a conflation of the words God and government. Brought together into one word, it refers to the
deification of government.
I define Godvernment as follows:
A verb, meaning:
·
the conferring of the powers and rights of God to
government;
·
the worship of government as the source of all that
is good;
·
belief that government, not God, is the most
likely means whereby humanity can rise above its own base behaviors to become the
best that it can be.
A noun, meaning:
· the supreme authority of a state or nation possessing the absolute authority to enact laws, judge violations of the laws, and execute offenders, all in the best interests of majority of people, without any regard for the will, wisdom, or rights of the people, collectively or individually.
In February of 2011, Patrice Lewis, writing for WND.com, said,
“…when we looked to God to provide our needs, we knew He was unlikely to hand us a loaf of bread on a silver platter…when we trust in God, we work hard to provide what we need. But when we trust in government, we demand that it give us our daily bread. For free. Whether we worked for it or not. After all, isn’t bread a right?”

Patrice unmasks certain essential truths
with her statement.
The most obvious is the last point—that
the misuse of the term “rights” is a key lever which is being used to pry people
away from reliance on God and closer to reliance on government.
The second, slightly less obvious, point
is that relying on God is a lot harder than relying on government. When you rely on God, you still have to “pray
like it all depends on God and then work like it all depends on you.”
It seems much easier to simply enroll
in some government program and then demand that your benefits be paid for by someone
else rather than having to work so hard to provide for yourself and others, while
giving the credit to God for giving you the opportunity and the means to capitalize
on it.
“Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.”
Jeremiah 17:5
When we put our faith and trust in government,
we are putting our faith and trust in man—in the arm of flesh—instead of in God.
To be fair, sometime after Jeremiah
told the Israelites that they were fools and cursed for trusting in each other,
they sawed him in half to try to get him to take it back. He wouldn’t, and he died.
Some would point to this and say that
Jeremiah was foolish to put his trust in God, because it got him killed. However, the reality is that we all die, and it
is better to die for a good cause, speaking the truth, than to live long while tearing
down others and wrapped in lies. The man
or woman who always tells the truth doesn’t have to remember what he or she said. The liar must always struggle to keep all the
lies lined up.
