Mythology and the Psychology of Power

Among the supernatural creatures of Celtic myths (the faeries), there are two primary camps of supernatural beings, the Seelie Court and the Unseelie Court.  While both of these groups have powers beyond what humans have, the difference between them lies in their philosophies of power.

The Seelie Court believes that its power should be used only when necessary to help humanity or its own kind to live better, happier lives.

The Unseelie Court operates on the premise that power is only power when it is exercised, and that it should be exercised often and freely and solely for the benefit, advantage, or enjoyment of the one wielding the power. The Unseelie Court is not a pleasant group for any unfortunate, powerless humans to interact with.

In contrast, the Seelie Court, while it can be dangerous, won’t abuse humans just because it can.

What the myths reveal about the inhabitants of the realm of Faerie provide us with useful insights into human nature.  And those insights into human nature uncover why Godvernment will inevitably fail in its effort to create Homo Superioris.

People who embrace the Unseelie approach to power generally fall into the category of mindsets which psychologists refer to as sociopathic. Sympathy and empathy for those who are affected by their use (or abuse) of power do not temper their actions as they do for most people.

Unseelies are always drawn to power.  The degree to which the Godvernmentalists succeed in making government powerful is a direct attraction to the Unseelie.  These Unseelie people will readily take government jobs as the avenue to power, and along the way, they will routinely use their power for their own pleasure, or simply because they can.  The use of their power will almost uniformly leave a wake of damaged lives and people behind and around them, and they will tend to attract like minds, so their inner circle will be heavily populated by Unseelies.

As these people pursue power, they will generally succeed because they are utterly ruthless.  They will use whatever tools come to their hands to remove people above them, below them, or beside them who are perceived to be in any way hindering their gathering and use of power.

For Unseelies, the gathering of power into the Godvernment is the establishment of an environment that will promote their worst natures.  This is in sharp contrast to the purported goal of Godvernment to create an utopian environment for the creation of Homo Superioris (Superman).

If you accept the belief of the Godvernmentalists that, to create a better human being, you have to first create the right environment, then you are defeated by your own principles.

Creating a Godvernment where human intellect is worshipped and power is consolidated into the hands of a few, who are supposed to use it to help the rest of us, will create institutions that are controlled by Unseelies.  This corrupted power structure will not have any desire (or ability) to create a Superman.  After all, if they succeed, they will have given power away into the hands of a creature who will be inherently more powerful than they are.

Some will argue this point and protest that the altruists will win out and move the noble enterprise forward.  Unfortunately, as I noted above, their very founding premises argue against them.

If circumstance determines behavior, then circumstances that enable Unseelie behavior will produce Unseelie behavior.

In sharp contrast with the idealistic Godvernmentalists, God worshippers believe that you must first change the inner person.  Then the inner person will change behaviors, and that will change circumstances.

This is the fundamental reason why faith-based 12-step programs for addicts of all sorts are consistently, measurably more effective than their agnostic or atheistic counterparts.  Successful addiction recovery programs aim to change the addict internally as the means to change their external behaviors.
